How to break out of the people pleasing mentality through constantly looking for everyone's approval and how you can start thriving as an entrepreneur and focus on YOUR people.
"Someone left a negative review and now I need to shut down my business."
If this is you, welcome. You've officially joined the PPEA (otherwise known as People Pleasing Entrepreneurs Anonymous). But, I'm here to tell you that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and you actually don't have to shut down your business because someone didn't like it.
This whole blog post is dedicated to you. We're in this together and I'm going to help you stay on track when the thought of someone not liking what you do... well... sends you into a spiral.
Tip #1 - Feel what you feel (BUT DON'T SPIRAL)
Don't bottle it up. Feel what you feel. Recognize that it stings when people don't like what you do (basically what you've poured your life into.... wait did I say don't spiral). It's okay to feel those emotions of hurt, but don't let it run your business. Don't take any action until you've had a pedicure.. or five. What I mean by that is, re-center yourself before you jump into any major decisions for your business.
Though I do highly suggest pedicures.
Tip #2 - Dig a little deeper
Some of the best advice I've received from a mentor is focusing on the source. Who's not pleased? Is it someone that is "your person?" Orrrrr is it someone who wasn't a right fit for your business. Focus on who the input is coming from. Is this something that truly applies to your business or is it coming from a "swipe left" kind of business relationship.
"You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, and there's still going to be somebody who hates peaches." –Dita Von Teese
Tip #3 - If you want growth, get a backbone first
The journey of entrepreneurship is full of ups & downs. It's a mess of emotions. But as your business grows, that means you'll have more and more who don't like what you do. Here's a secret for you: it's okay that someone won't like your business.
If you're going to spiral after one negative review or bad feedback, it's time to start workin' on that backbone honey (mine may or may not still be coming in. It's like molars right?). What I'm trying to tell you is that you have to toughen up. The more you grow and receive unpleasant reviews, the less it will effect you.
Full disclosure... I did cry for three days when I got my first bad review.
Tip #4 - Bring out the mantras
I'm a BIG mantra gal. I like to have something that I can repeat to myself when I start feeling something that makes me uncomfortable. Find a mantra that speaks to you and have it somewhere you can physically see it: your office, your bathroom mirror, your closet, the pantry (my personal fav), etc.
Tip #5 - Focus on the positive
I always go back to the positive reviews and they usually outnumber the negative by a lot. Read through them when you need to get out of a negative headspace. Remind yourself of the people you're serving and doing the work for.
